If you saw Gravity, Noah, and/or Godzilla in a Dolby Atmos Surround Sound-equipped movie theater, then you experienced the outstanding new quality of this very sound system. Now you can bring this amazing new experience to your home theater system. The biggest differences with this new system is that the sound moves around the independently controlled speakers, as the creators intended, matching what you see on the screen. This system actually has speakers that are over your head to add to the realism of pounding rain for example.
You don’t even have to completely change out your curret system in order to get this system. To complement the speakers you already have, Dolby has created an add-on Dolby Atmos-enabled speaker module. You don’t even have to put speakers in your ceiling if you don’t want to, as Dolby has speakers that will fire sound upward to then reflect off of the ceiling.
The independently controlled speakers and overhead sound are not the only things that make this system so unique. Dolby has worked directly with filmmakers to allow them to create the exact sound placement and movement that they want for their audience. They are working to make soundtracks for a broad range of movies and TV available in Dolby Atmos. Production houses and studios will start to put out Blu-Ray and streaming video in Dolby Atmos as soon as this fall.
This system is based on audio objects instead of traditional channels. Each and every sound heard in a movie scene is treated as an audio object, giving filmmakers the control to place each sound in the exact place around an audience that they want it to be heard and to move it accordingly. Best of all, this system will play more than just Dolby Atmos sound quality labeled products, switching easily to stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 content as needed.
Yes, the Dolby Atmos system will require you to put more speakers into your home theater, but the added quality of sound from your existing 5.1 or 7.1 to a 9.1 or 11.1 system will knock the socks off of any doubting audiophile.
